The appendix is a long, thin pouch that’s shaped like a finger. It hangs down from the large intestine, which is also referred to as the colon.

What is appendicitis?
When the appendix gets infected and inflamed it is known as Appendicitis. If that happens, it will swell and, in some cases, burst. that is dangerous, because a burst appendix can cause infection within the belly.
What are the symptoms of appendicitis?
The usual symptoms include:
Severe pain on the right side of lower part of the belly. (In some people, pain starts near the belly button and then moves to the lower right side.)
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomit
- Fever
Some people can have different symptoms, such as:
- Stomach upset
- Having a lot of gas
- Irregular gut movements
- Diarrhoea
- Feeling sick
Is there a test for appendicitis?
If you have appendicitis, your doctor may be able to diagnose it simply by doing an test. He can learn a lot regarding your condition by pressing on your belly and talking with you regarding your symptoms. If your doctor isn’t sure after the test, can do tests to check what’s causing your symptoms. Tests may include a CT scan, that may be a special kind of X-ray.
Should I see a doctor?
Yes. call your doctor right away if you have the symptoms listed above. the risk of your appendix bursting is much higher after the first twenty four hours of symptoms. If the appendix bursts, the surgery to treat it’ll be more complicated.
How is appendicitis treated?
The main treatment for appendicitis is surgery to get rid of the appendix. There are two ways of surgery as follows:
Open surgery – during an open surgery, the doctor makes a cut close to the appendix that’s sufficiently big to pull the appendix through.
Laparoscopic surgery – during laparoscopic surgery, the doctor makes a couple of cuts that are much smaller than those used in open surgery. Doctor then inserts long, thin tool into the belly. one of the tools contains a camera (called a “laparoscope”) on the tip, that sends photos to a TV screen. The doctor can examine the image on the screen to understand where to cut and what to remove. Then he uses the long tools to do the surgery.
If your appendix has burst, your surgery can probably be more complicated than it would be if it had not burst. Your doctor will need to wash away the material that spills out once an appendix burst. As a result, your cuts may be larger otherwise you may spend more time in surgery.
Can appendicitis be treated without surgery?
Yes. but your choices can depend upon whether or not your appendix has burst.
If your appendix has not burst, it’s possible to treat appendicitis with just antibiotics. But, without surgery, there’s a chance your appendicitis can return again. So, surgery remains the most effective treatment in most cases.
If your appendix has burst, but it has been some days since this happened, your doctor may decide not to do surgery promptly. that is because the body generally forms a pocket around the appendix to block off the infection. in this case, your doctor can probably provide you with antibiotics and watch you carefully until you’re well. but you will still need surgery later to get rid of your appendix. that is because at least one in ten individuals with a burst appendix have a tumour in their appendix that may solely be removed by surgery.
What if I am pregnant?
If you’re pregnant and suppose you’ve got signs of appendicitis, make sure you tell your doctors that you are pregnant.
