Robotic Spleen Surgery

Robotic Spleen Surgery | Kaizen Hospital

Robotic Spleen Surgery

Robotic spleen surgery, also known as robotic splenectomy, is a minimally invasive procedure to remove the spleen using robotic-assisted technology. The spleen is a vital organ located in the upper left side of the abdomen, responsible for filtering blood, storing red blood cells, and fighting infections. Conditions affecting the spleen, such as splenic tumors, cysts, or an enlarged spleen (splenomegaly), may require its removal.

Robotic splenectomy offers a less invasive alternative to traditional open or laparoscopic splenectomy, allowing for more precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and quicker recovery.

Types of Robotic Spleen Surgery

  1. Robotic Total Splenectomy

  2. Robotic Partial Splenectomy

Robotic Total Splenectomy

  • Procedure: In this surgery, the entire spleen is removed using robotic assistance.
  • Indications: Performed for conditions like splenic tumors, trauma, or hematologic disorders where the spleen is completely dysfunctional.

Robotic Partial Splenectomy

  • Procedure: Only part of the spleen is removed, preserving some splenic function.
  • Indications: Used in cases of localized splenic cysts or tumors where removing the entire spleen is unnecessary.

Surgery Management

1. Pre-surgery Preparations

  • Patients undergo imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to assess the spleen’s size, condition, and nearby structures.
  • Patients are advised to fast and avoid certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure.

2. Procedure

  • Anesthesia: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so the patient remains asleep during surgery.
  • Small Incisions: Several small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert robotic arms and a camera.
  • Robotic System: The surgeon controls the robotic arms from a console, using the system’s high-definition 3D view to navigate around the spleen.
  • Splenic Dissection: The surgeon carefully dissects the spleen from the surrounding blood vessels and organs, using precise robotic instruments.
  • Spleen Removal: The spleen or part of it is placed in a special bag and removed through one of the small incisions.

3. Post- surgery care

  • Patients typically stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after robotic splenectomy, though recovery is faster compared to open surgery.
  • Postoperative pain is managed with medications, though patients experience less pain than with traditional surgery.
