Dr Neebha Haribhakti, DO, MS [Ophthalmology] Special interest in Neuro Ophthalmology

Neuro-ophthalmology is a branch of Ophthalmology that merges the fields of neurology and ophthalmology, often dealing with complex systemic diseases that have manifestations in the visual system. In simple language, it is the branch of Ophthalmology which deals with the diseases and disorders of the nerves controlling vision and motility of the eyes and the associated Central Nervous System Pathology.

The nerves crucial for vision are

  • Optic nerve
  • Occulomotor nerve
  • Trochlear nerve
  • Abducens nerve

These nerves are often involved in the diseases of the brain and the spinal cord. Such involvement results in neurological vision defects.

Kaizen Hospital’s PRASANN NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY CLINIC helps treat such patients.

PRASANN NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY CLINIC is the only such clinic in Ahmedabad. Hence most of the patients suffering from vision related nerves are referred to our clinic.

We conduct thorough ophthalmic examination, investigations and treat such patients medically.

Perimetry

A visual field test is an eye examination that can detect dysfunction in central and peripheral vision which may be caused by various medical conditions such as glaucoma, stroke, pituitary disease, brain tumours or other neurological deficits. Visual field testing can be performed clinically by keeping the subject’s gaze fixed while presenting objects at various places within their visual field.
The name comes from the method of testing the perimeter of the visual field. Perimetry more carefully maps and quantifies the visual field, especially at the extreme periphery of the visual field.

What Happens During a Perimetry Test?
The automated perimetry test uses a computer program to test an individual’s visual field. You will sit and look into a dome-shaped instrument. Your doctor will instruct you to look at an object in the middle of the dome throughout the test.
There will be small flashes of light on the dome. When you see these flashes of light, you will press a button. The computer program will provide your doctor with a map of your visual field. Your doctor can then use this information to help diagnose Diseases, whether ophthalmic or neurological.

What Are the Causes of Visual Field Problems?
Visual field problems have a number of causes, including disorders that don’t originate in the eye, but in the central nervous system or the part of the brain that deals with vision.

It is a very important and basic test to detect conditions like

  • Glaucoma
  • pituitary gland disorders
  • temporal arteritis
  • stroke
  • brain tumor
  • central nervous system disorders
  • multiple sclerosis
  • optic glioma
  • macular degeneration
