An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, usually part of the intestine, bulges through a weakness in the lower abdominal muscles. This hernia is most likely to develop around the groin and is most frequent in men, but women can have it as well. As insignificant as the thought of hernias might initially seem, they can become very serious health problems if ignored. Therefore, taking the time to better understand what they are, what they might feel like, and what can be done to have them resolved is worth the effort.

Different Types of Inguinal Hernias

There are mainly two types of inguinal hernias that you should know:

  • Direct Inguinal Hernia: It typically develops slowly as a consequence of ageing or of repeated straining on the abdominal muscles. It bulges through a point of weakness of the abdominal wall just within the groin.
  • Indirect Inguinal Hernia: Mostly present at birth, this is the kind that occurs when an opening that is supposed to close by birth, which is an opening in the groin, does not close. This allows tissue to bulge through, creating a hernia. This is the more common type and can occur at any age.

How to recognise the symptoms?

Symptoms of an inguinal hernia may include mild pain or noticeable pain. Watch for:

  • A lump or bulge in the groin area that can go away when you lie down
  • Groin pain or pressure, particularly upon coughing, lifting, or bending
  • Feeling of heaviness or being dragged below the belly button
  • Discomfort or weakness around the pelvic area
  • In males, pain or swelling around the testicles

Treatment Choices You Can Trust

Surgery is the most effective treatment for an inguinal hernia. There are two standard techniques:

Open Surgery

An incision is made down to the groin to gently push the hernia back and strengthen the wall with stitches or mesh.

Laparoscopic Surgery

It includes the utilisation of minimal cuts, cameras, and special equipment to mend the hernia without pain and a quick return to full life.

Both of these procedures are safe, and most people are back on their feet in weeks. Failing to treat a hernia, however, can create very serious problems involving strangulation or obstruction of the intestine.
